Networking is one of those things every business owner knows they should do, but let’s face it—it can feel intimidating, awkward, and sometimes like a waste of time. Recently, I had the opportunity to take a networking class, I gained some incredible insights into how to make networking feel less daunting and more productive.
Here are the top takeaways I had from the training session to help you approach networking with confidence and purpose.
1. Go In With a Plan
Networking events can feel like a whirlwind if you don’t have a clear goal in mind. Instead of just showing up and hoping for the best, create a plan for what you want to achieve.
Ask yourself:
Are you looking to meet a specific type of person?
Are you hoping to connect with a particular company or industry?
Having an objective ensures you’ll leave the event feeling like your time was well spent. Plus, it helps you evaluate whether attending similar events in the future will be worth your while.
For example, I’ve often gone to networking events without much of a strategy, hoping to make a few connections. I’d leave feeling unsure about whether it was a good use of my time. Now, I’ll approach each event with clear goals in mind, like meeting three new potential business partners or learning about a specific market trend.
2. Show Up With Energy and Curiosity
When you’re networking, your energy and attitude matter. It is important to bring positivity and curiosity to every interaction. Even if someone doesn’t seem like a perfect fit for your business or goals, keep an open mind—you never know where the conversation might lead.
It’s also important to put your best foot forward. Smile, make eye contact, and engage with genuine interest. People remember how you make them feel, and showing enthusiasm makes you more approachable and memorable.
3. Keep It Simple When Explaining What You Do
One of the most valuable tips I learned was to simplify how you explain your business. Think of it like this: how would you explain what you do to a child? Use simple, straightforward language that anyone can understand.
You can always get more detailed if the person you’re speaking with works in a similar field or has a deeper understanding of your industry. But at the start, your goal should be to make your work accessible and easy to grasp. This ensures you’re leaving a clear and lasting impression on everyone you meet.
4. End With an Ask
Here’s a networking game-changer: don’t leave a conversation without making an ask. Whether it’s requesting a referral, asking for advice, or seeking an introduction, this simple step can make your interactions more impactful.
Most people genuinely enjoy helping others. It brings them joy to make a meaningful connection or share their knowledge. So don’t be afraid to ask for what you need—you might be surprised at how eager people are to help.
Networking doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a little preparation, the right mindset, and a clear strategy, you can turn networking events into powerful opportunities to grow your business and make meaningful connections.
